How To Become A Home Health Aide In New York?

If you love caring for people, a home health aide could be a stable and exciting career option for you. Due to an increase in the number of aging populations, the demand for these professionals in New York has also increased. And it will continue to grow in the coming years.

With the increase in the aging population, there is a high demand for HHAs in the state, especially in New York City. However, finding the right HHA program can be challenging due to the many options available.

The training could be expensive in some places. But some certified agencies in Long Island and Queens can provide HHA training at an affordable price.

To become a certified HHA in New York, you can complete the training at a university or a certified agency that is approved by either.

  • New York State Department of Health. Or
  • New York State Education Department.

All HHAs in New York are regulated by the New York Department of Health and are required to complete a minimum of 95 hours of training, which includes.

  • 65 hours of classroom-based training; and
  • 30 hours of clinical practice.

The number of hours for classes and hands-on training may vary from one program to another.

The classroom-based training includes 45 hours of lectures provided by experienced instructors and 20 hours of return demonstration to help students learn home health aide skills.

Clinical practice allows students to practice the skills they've learned in the classroom.

Once you complete the certification program, you'll receive a certificate and registry number from the Home Care Registry. This will place you in the state database of certified home health aides. However, if you quit your job with an agency or get an employment opportunity in another state, your certification will lapse two years from the last day you worked in New York.
